Your rights on every U.S. airline
Under U.S. DOT rules you can cancel any ticket within 24 hours of booking for a full refund (when departure is 7+ days away), and you are owed a cash refund — not just credit — when the airline cancels or significantly changes your flight.
American Airlines
No change fees on Main Cabin fares and above for domestic, short-haul international, and select long-haul international routes.
United Airlines
No change fees on standard Economy and premium cabins for flights within the U.S. and between the U.S. and Mexico or the Caribbean.
Southwest Airlines
Southwest charges no change fees on any fare type — the only major U.S. carrier with this policy across all fares.
JetBlue Airways
No change fees on paid or award tickets except Blue Basic. Same-day confirmed switches are available for a modest fee.
Alaska Airlines
No change fees on Main and First Class fares. Same-day confirmed changes are available for a small fee, waived for elite members.
Spirit Airlines
Spirit dropped standard change fees in 2024. Higher fare bundles change free; the lowest fares may carry route-dependent charges.
Frontier Airlines
Frontier eliminated change fees on most fares in 2024. Changes made close to departure or on the most basic bundles may carry charges.
