Can you change the name on a plane ticket?
Published September 20, 2026 · Policies verified September 20, 2026
Two very different questions hide inside this one. Fixing a misspelled name is routine. Giving your ticket to somebody else is, on almost every U.S. airline, not allowed at any price.
Flights Cheap Fare is an independent travel agency — not an airline and not affiliated with any airline. Any service fee we charge is disclosed before you pay, and we tell you when the airline offers the same thing free.
Corrections: usually fine
Airlines expect typos. A transposed letter, a missing middle name, a married name that does not match the passport, a booking made as Dave when the licence says David — these are corrections, and carriers generally fix them, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee.
What matters is that the corrected name is recognisably the same person as the government ID you will show at security. Fix it as soon as you notice, because a correction is far easier before check-in opens than at the airport with a queue behind you.
Transfers: almost never
A ticket is a contract with you specifically. Your sister cannot fly on it, and neither can a colleague, and the airline is not being difficult — ticket transfer is prohibited by most carriers' own conditions of carriage, and security rules require the boarding pass to match the ID.
Here is the trap, and it is an expensive one: people book a cheap fare for a trip they are not sure who will take, assuming they can swap the name later for a fee. There is usually no such fee, because there is usually no such option. The ticket is either used by the named passenger or it is not used.
The one legitimate workaround
Southwest is the notable exception, in a roundabout way. Cancel an eligible fare and the value becomes a Transferable Flight Credit that can be given to another traveller, once, provided both people are Rapid Rewards members. The credit expires 12 months from the date the original fare was booked and ticketed, and the lowest Basic fare does not qualify.
Elsewhere, if the traveller has genuinely changed, the honest path is to cancel and rebook. Whether that costs you anything depends on the fare you bought, which is the real reason to read the change rules before you pick the cheapest line on the results page.
Married names, nicknames and middle names
The test is whether the ticket matches the government ID you will present, not whether it matches your everyday name. A ticket in a maiden name is fine if that is what the passport says; a ticket in a new married name is a problem if the passport has not caught up yet.
Middle names are the most common near-miss. Some airlines require the full name exactly as it appears on the ID, and others accept first and last only. For domestic U.S. travel it is rarely fatal; for international itineraries, where the ticket data is transmitted to border authorities in advance, treat an exact match as the standard.
If you spot a problem the night before, do not wait and hope. Contact the airline, or us if we issued the ticket, and get the correction recorded in the reservation. An agent fixing it at the airport is working against a check-in clock and a queue, and that is the worst possible moment to need a favour.
Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer my plane ticket to someone else?
On almost every U.S. airline, no. Tickets are issued to a named passenger and most conditions of carriage prohibit transferring them, and the boarding pass has to match the ID presented at security.
Can I correct a misspelled name on my ticket?
Usually yes. Airlines routinely correct typos, missing middle names and name changes after marriage, sometimes free and sometimes for a fee, provided the corrected name matches your government ID. Do it as early as possible.
Is there any airline that lets me give a ticket to another person?
Southwest comes closest. Cancelling an eligible fare produces a Transferable Flight Credit that can be transferred once to another Rapid Rewards member. It expires 12 months from when the original fare was booked, and the lowest Basic fare is not eligible.
What happens if the name on my ticket does not match my ID?
You may be denied boarding. Small discrepancies are often waved through at the agent's discretion, but nothing obliges them to do it, so treat a mismatch as something to fix in advance rather than argue at the gate.
Does a name correction cost money?
It depends on the airline and the size of the correction. Minor typos are often fixed free, while larger corrections can carry a fee on some carriers. It is almost always cheaper than the alternative, which is cancelling and rebooking.
